The heart of the Artificial Stone Company will always lie in the restoration of historic buildings. There is something incredibly satisfying about removing multiple layers – and sometimes centuries – of old paint to reveal the cross-sections of colour that have decorated a structure throughout its history.  This is where the renovation side of our business truly takes over.  Much of the stone we replace was originally crafted from materials like Roman cement, which has finally failed after hundreds of years, or soft Bath stone, eroded by age and weathering.

Increasingly, even relatively modern buildings require renovation due to failing iron frames or rusting reinforcement.  Two prime examples are our recent projects:  Asia House in the City of London and the National Theatre on the South Bank. In our replacement units we introduce modern-day equivalents featuring more robust internal components, such as stainless steel or “Rockbar” – a high-strength, non-corrosive reinforcement product that is stronger than high-tensile steel.   Formed from ground-up basalt mixed with resin and structural strands,   Rockbar produces long reinforcement rods that, despite being multiple times stronger, visually resemble mild steel.
